Iroquois Village
I remember that project vividly Tom-I thought you were the rich kid!!!!!
I am not sure how the John Ryan stuff started-but-I remember the funeral-God forgive me- I can't remember for who-I am sure it was the first wake alot of us went to:but my memeory is John saying-"He looks fake or something like that" We all were so serious at the time and then after John said that we were all imploding trying not to laugh. I pulled a muscle in my stomach trying not to laugh!
Josephine Arias-Unbelievable-Where did you learn to talk like that_ I thought you were St. Josephine-I guess not!!!!!!!
So.. I am manning the fort for all the trick or treaters ! Any good stories about halloween from Queens? I remember bombing the buses on 62nd drive with eggs-Who else admits it?
so... Heres a memory-I forgot the name of our class mate that was not all that motivated at school-but... he memorized every preposition-I can remember it now to this day him saying-" about , above ,across, after .... He was unbeleivable-he didn't graduate with us though. So.... who is he?
so many things going on - I just won't be able to make-But-the OLA reunion - we will be there! Why not a cold barbecue Sonja-You were always the tough one!
I still tell that story to my friends. But it WAS at a METs game. I swear-I have never laughed so hard seeing francisco pereda, stumble and fall 5 rows vertically landing on a bunch of people. I remember it vivdly-almost seeing it in slow motion! To this day its my favorite story to tell people how vertical the upper decK was at Shea!

Wait a minute. I was going to tell the same story!
Yes, it is true. Ms. Marus passed away at least 15 years ago. After I became a teacher, she would come to my home to visit during the Christmas vacations. I heard that she was going grocery shopping for her mother, had just pulled her car into Queens Blvd. and was hit head on by another car and died instantly. If there is another Joan Marus who is listed, at age 70, I think that would be a little too young. Remember, our Ms. Marus had been a nun, left the order and then was teaching quite a few years at OLA, and yes, then at Stella Marris HS before her death. The math just doesnt work!
John- Wasnt Hiroshi the mystery baseball player you mentioned in your BLOG? I remember he could play as well as any of you guys, but he just didnt "brag" about his abilities. I remember him as a quiet, studious, well-rounded kind of guy. Are my memories incorrect? Didnt he return to Japan prior to graduation?
Remember the little bowling alley we all went to across Queens Blvd. Ms Marus sponsored the bowling club, and to get into the alley, you went in the door, and then down a long flight of steps till you entered this dinky alley. I used to think I was sooooo cool, being able to go bowling on my own without my mother being with me. Ahhhhh innocence!!!!Forgot the name of the alley and wonder if its even still there. It's probably been converted to a Korean produce stand or something.
Just a question out to all. Are we REALLY going to do this reunion, and if so, are we unanimous about it being the weekend of April 17th? I am seriously contemplating returning to school (for either my 3rd Masters or to finish my PhD. ( not yet sure which), and time will be a short commodity for me for the next few years. I would like to carve out the reunion time, and would love to know as early as possible so I can schedule classes, etc. - let alone make arrangements for and with my family. Yes, I DO plan on attending alone, but will bring pictures of the family. Comments, anyone???????
When I was first placed in her class I was terrified because I heard what a "hard" teacher she was. Math was always my most difficult subject, and I remember one day breaking down in tears in class, while everyone else was out in the playground. Miss Marus was "tutoring" me - but inwhat part of math I cant remember now. I remember her sitting down next to me (and in those small desks it was not easy for someone her size) and soothing my hair until I stopped crying. She reached over, closed the math book, looked me straight in the eye and said "Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Math is your weakness, but I bet someday you will end up teaching math, and when your students dont understand a concept, you will always remember today." How right she was, God rest her soul.
John,
In seventh grade some of us went into the eighth grade class for reading (SRA). I think it was Raymond Asavado (?) who shot a paper clip at a Christmas tree ornament and woke up Sr. Joseph. I vaguely remember but believe there was an issue of no one being willing to tell who did it and the entire class was punished.
Wasn't there an incident where the boys and girls switched ties and we all got in trouble?
Sr. Louise - Pulling your hair
Do you remember First Holy Communion Day. After we received, we came back to the pew to say our prayers, etc. and I told a joke to John Ryan. He started laughing and spit up the host. It fell on the floor in front of the first pew. They had to come over and do a special little ceremony with holy water, etc. to clean up the mess. I was in deep Kimchie that day! Ne how Jo.
Wait a second. Edelweiss was our class song! Remember singing it in church on graduation day? We were all amazing, even Jorge! Glenn was famous for singing Rawhide!
Hello everyone....
I saw some of the ideas on where and when-My two cents is to have it where we could do a barbecue and hang out outside-our kids could have some fun and we could get reaquainted without being in some stuffy reception hall.I guess I forgot though that Queens probably doesn't have something like that-what about Kissena park?Where I am in upstate NY we have state parks that make this a great way to get together.
Were you really as old as we all thought? I always wondered why you were shaving in the 8th grade!
My wife and I figured out that we could make this work-who else is going?
Glad you signed in Sonja.
Hi John,
Here are the current members:
Well-I think I made it to the site-but I am not sure-I'll do some testing today!
Sonja,
What comes to mind when I think of Douglas Roll at OLA? Apart from The Alter Boys, Rye Beach and funerals, the time we spent on the floor of his living room creating a model Iroquois Long House. I think that must have been in Sr. Paul's fifth grade. That was a great project! I grew up in a Rego Park apartment on the first floor. At the time, I thought that Douglas' family must have been super wealthy, living in a luxury apartment building, on such a high floor. Somehow the name of the building, The Saxon comes to mind. Remember the class trip we had to the Museum of the American Indian? -Tom

I sent out a blog invitation to Matthew Monahan.
Thanks Josephine. I'm sure that we all have some interesting photos from the OLA days. I have First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Graduation pics. I remember bringing a camera into the classroom one day and taking some serious heat for doing so. Anyway, while I figure out where those old photos are, find yours! Some current pictures are OK too. Upload them to hpphoto.com where the login and passwords are both OLA1969. After you sign in, just select the OLA1969 Album. Upload your photos and we can have a website. -Tom
I scanned in our yearbook. If you would like to see the 1969 OLA Yearbook go to www.hpphoto.com , then log in as ola1969. The password is ola1969. View album ola 1969. Click of the blue clover photo and view full screen. Eventually I'll set up a proper website to make this easier. Marlene can add the full roster to her master list. Enjoy. -Tom

Remember Br. Raphael, the head of the Multi Media Center? Remember those Molloy Dances? The girls would line up on one side of the gym and the guys on the other. Within an hour everyone was paired up and Br. Raphael would begin pointing his flashlight at our interlocked faces. Remember how crazy it was? We should have introduced Bro. Raphael to Sr, Regina Rose. What a combo that would have been? Remember going to Mary Louis dances (The Crusader Dance) and the band was Jayson Garfield? Leo, who was your girlfiend was in the fifth grade anyway?

Remember we were marched over to confession every Holy Thursday? One time I told Sr. Ignatious that I did not think it was fair that we all had to go to over to confession "every single Holy Thursday". She asked why and I said, "Sister, I didn't commit any sins this month". She pulled me by the hair in the hallway and said "Get in that line, Young Man!"
Dear All,
We will probably be a small group. While I am interested in seeing the school and church again, it would be difficult to have a nice event in the school. I vote for a Saturday night event at the Marriott and possibly a coffee thing in the auditorium after church on Sunday as an option. Those that need to can fly out on Sunday afternoon. The LGA Marriott is convenient with car rental, airport and access to the bridges right there. I've stayed there many times over the years. It's not a great hotel, it's convenient.
