"a memory"

we will be together again.
time will stand together for us once more,
and invite us all to...
remember:
we will be back,
and ready to swap places
with yesterday.
we were enough.
Change, around us
forever
and we will laugh.
reunions are like that.
they help us understand what we are,
and remind us of of what we were.
a part of somthing
fragile.
a memory.
yes, we will gather together again.
and when we leave,
we will be pleased.
for we will take with us
the only thing we will bring - -
Each Other!

Merry Christmas

Warmest Christmas Greetings to the OLA Class of 1969
and every good wish for the coming year.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

-Tom

Tango Anyone?

Dear Leo-
Now that will be a sight worth seeing. So you are giving us all tango lessons? Sign me up for one. I'll bring the rose for my teeth.
One again, no matter where he had his eyes, Michael Colon was not my dance partner that fateful evening. I do believe, even if his eyes strrayed to my netherland, his hands stayed where they belonged. Keep trying to figure this riddle out, you little riddler, you!

I secodnd Josephines sentiments. This blogger has been wonderful for reuniting people who once meant a lot to each other, and through age and distance, drifted apart. Thanks, Tom, for giving us this means of communication. Merry Christmas to one and all.

I said "Gentleman"

Dear John-
As far as I know, John Troy never was or perhaps never will be, a gentleman. This poor soul truly was trying to be a gentleman at the same time being a boy, and made his best effort at putting me at ease by telling me no one was watching. Sorry, John, you are still incorrect.

As for your description of the barbaring efforts of your father, you had me rolling in gales of laughter. You have quite a unique way of expressing yourself.

Keep guessing, boys. I am amazed that I have stumped Leo - being the riddler that he is.

Merry Christmas to all!

Still Wrong Boys!

Dear John and Leo -
Hmmmm, not as good as you thought you were, hmmmmm? No, my mystery dance partner is still that - a mystery to you both. I doubt very much that we shall re-enact that "last dance" since I have not heard his name mentioned on the blog. there, that gives you all another clue. You completely ignored my first one, which was cloked in some rhetoric. Thought at least one of you would see through that!!!

What I can do, in honor of the occasion, is to plait my hair in those pig tails that Douglas and Matthew taunted me about. What can I tell you; my mother loved my hair that way. I hated it, but that didnt matter much to my mom!

Anyhow, Zeida suggested I let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak, and keep my mystery dancer a mystery, for his own dignity. I will reveal his identity at the reunion if he does not show up; and maybe even if he does show.

Of course I shall bring my CD collection. See ya in May!

JOHN

Forest Hill caterers are pretty expensive, since many of the restaurants are relatively new and are paying very high rents. I have never heard of any one having a problem with catering from Costco since they'll correct any problem on the spot. It would also make it simpler as a "one stop shopping deal" Lets get other New Yorkers, living in the area involved. Maybe one of our male classmates can volunteer to pick it up. I'll try to have some menus for the meeting. If we start catering from different places the cost is going to go up and the work for us, few,is going to get harder. I think all research should be done before the meeting,so definite decisions can be arrived at, then. At least suggestions, with as much information as possible. I still think having had it at the Sly Fox with all the work done for us,for 35 dollars per person, would have been the more practical thing to do. BUT,I'll go along with whatever must be done, for the sake of the group. I'm exhausted, just talking about what needs to be done. Nite all. Zeida

Suggestion

We should explore the large platters at Costco, which includes Sushi platters, shrimp platters, turkey, cold cuts, antipasto and other fairly good choices. They feed between 20-25 persons. We can also purchase rolls there,as well as liquor at very reasonable prices. They can be ordered and then picked up on the day of the party. We can order more ,of one ,then the other,if we wish. Actually,I do not want to be on the treasury committee so,Senior Presidente, count me out of that one. We should try to make the catering as simple as possible while providing good and varied choices of food. I think Costco is a good idea. I've tried it's dishes at various functions and have found it to be good. Someone will have to volunteer to pick it up,because they do not deliver. It's in Westbury,Long Island. About half hour away from Forest Hills.

Too Pushy!!

Dear Zeida-

To answer your questions concerning "my scoundrel", at the moment, since he held one of my hands, and people were dancing on by smiling at us, I remember not wanting to make a big scene or issue of it, since I didnt want anyone to know it was happening. If it was now, well, I believe I might have had a "knee jerk" reaction and that would have ended that. I have become "caloused" in my older age.

JO,JO,JO

YES,we'll have Leo or John walk around the neighborhood filming sites ,restaurants, delis and the old neighborhood and then we'll film him getting arrested when some person feels that their privacy has been violated. The ideal these days is just not attainable, when everyone is considered a potential terrorist or child molestor ,especially when they're caught with a video camera at hand. But,of course,it's up to them and there's always the chance that nothing will happen. I ,however, will not be there to watch a childhood friend being "booked",but maybe we can all meet to watch the video. Suzzette, I can't even guess as to which one of our classmates would have attempted that nasty, violating deed. I do think, however, that your riddle will not be answered due to the implications of scarring this person's reputation ,as a good catholic boy. Why didn't you push the "SCOUNDREL" away? Zeida

Leo, You Didn't Allow Us To Give Up

Dear Leo-
Come on now, "old boy". You never gave anyone on the blogger the option just to give up, when you were riddling them. How come you opt out with that choice for my riddle? And yes, you were too there, dancing by with someone as John sailed by with Carol. Just cause something went on without your knowledge doesnt mean it didnt happen. Come on Leo, think. You know him too (obviously, since we all went to school together).Like I said, he was quite the gentleman, encouraging me not to worry about being seen and all. But he had a bit of a different agenda than I did.

As for the videoing of the organizational meeting, that point has its pros and cons. I think that the NY people have to put an aweful lot of effort into putting this thing together. I truly believe that too many cooks spoil the broth. Lets just put our faith in these NY people to honor the wishes of the majority (of those expressing wishes) and lets just get on with it, organize it, and meet and have a fun time after all these years. Food choices can be given after the set up committee meets, and can be put on a spreadsheet if we are catering in ( the easiest, I feel). The important thing here isnt the venue or the menu, but meeting up with each other after all this time. Lets not be too adult about this - lets not make it complicated. Keep it simple, get it to happen, and enjoy each others company, is my philosophy.

Of course I'll bring the music I mentioned. It's on CD's. I take it Anna has a CD player, right?

Personally, the only thing I would wish for is that we all contribute to the food and beverage, or maybe BYOB wouldnt be a bad idea either. Then we might consider having a maid service come in and set Annas house back in shape the way it was before we all invaded it. That way, no one gets put out, we all pay for the accomodations, and no one has to worry about cleaning up afterwards. We can still all enjoy chatting and reminiscing with each other. There, you have my two-cents worth of input. I think its not too rigid a request, is it?

By the way New Yorkers, we here in Florida are settling in for a freezing night. Temperatures are going down into the 30's tonight. My poor tropical foliage in my yard. It is too large to get enough blankets and sheets to cover them. I have the heat on in the house, and I am wearing warm clothes, but oh boy, these temperatures are NOT why I moved here. I want my hot temps!!!!!! Hopefully the Bahamas will be warm when we cruise there next week.

On Second Thought

A live recording of the meeting would be a fantastic idea,JO. But is it possible to air it on the Blogger? Tommy,is it possible to do that? Maybe we can also designate a President,Vice-President,Treasurer and a stenographer to make sure we cover all bases. Jo,I really want you to be there with us,you seem to be the "Calm,in the storm". Come on "ANIMINATE"! La "CUBA LIBRE" ayudo calmarme. See all later. :) Zeida

YES,CASTRO DID ALOT TO US

JO,I'm totally in agreement of a video cam, where instant imput could be given but a video recording of our meeting I am not in favor of. If I decide not to be part of this, maybe you can take my place. Or maybe all the members that are not going to be present can send their own video recordings to the committee for us to review, thereby allowing us to reach a fair and universal decision on the particulars of the reunion. I just think this should be fun and not as complicated as it seems to be becoming. We will never get anything done if we don't take steps to JUST DO IT as simply as we can. Suggestions are great but it's the members in NYC that have to ultimately implement them, and that's going to be quite a job. And JO,how come you're not on this committee? I don't even know how or who put me on it. :) Zeida

No Video Recorder,Please

I think it's getting a little out of control when every action must be monitored, especially when it's subjected to only a few of our members. Count me out of any type of recording. I'm offering my services as a courtesy to friends, not to be on display. A video recorder would be fine, once we are ALL gathered, but as a remembrance and nothing else.Details of our meeting can be posted and reviewed by all. The main thing is to get together and enjoy each other's company. Nothing can be perfect and shouldn't be. We are all different and have gone through 35 years of different experiences. Our reunion should reflect this. The menu should be varied,as well as the music, decorations etc. We were not all the same in the 60's and we're not all the same now. So,John let me know exactly what we are planning to do,when we meet in January. :) Zeida

Not So, Riddler!

Leo-
With that incredible memory of yours, you have incorrectly guessed at my "esteemed" damce partner on this particular evening. Never did I wish for a ruler wielding nun more. Although my partner whispered words of encouragement in my ear - "Don't worry, no one will see". And although he remained ever so much the gentleman, his hand did stray slightly lower on my back than was comfortable. I remember Carole dancing by, looking at the hand placement and smiling at me. I think I was not smiling back.
Have a wonderful time in Brazil. I hear it is very beautiful, although I have never been there myself. I hear the women are "wicked", better watch out Leo. They may give you a "run for your money".
Suzette

More Songs (Carol,take notes)

Red Rubberball,Yummy Yummy, Wild Thing,Born to Be Wild,Sunshine of Your love,Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog, Lola,Daydream Believer, Spinning Wheel and more to come ,soon. Nite all Zeida

Songs

25 miles,Little Green apples,Midnight Confession, Inacada-da-vida?, White room,Young Girl. I'm not clear on the dates of these songs but they were around that time, I think. I'm sure we can find CD's from those specific years, like 1967,68 and 69. Doug,we picked up our son this past weekend from Morrisville,HOW DO YOU SURVIVE UP THERE! It took us 9 hours to get back home on the Thruway and I heard the other kids at the college were stranded there due to the amount of snow that accumulated later on. It's beautiful, but a bit frightening. We love the snow for skiing. We ski at Big Boulder in PA because it's 5 minutes from our place there. I don't know how I would be able to live with large amounts of snow everyday. My son,on the other hand loves it! I guess that's what counts. Talk soon, bye all Zeida

me again

Sorry about the misspelling and things,I'm sneaking this in from work and my principal keeps stopping by my room for questions. I wrote it under pressure to publish. Hear he comes!!!!!! Bye Zeida

TOM,Was it You?

Tom,was it you I danced with?Or is Johnny-boy shaping my lost memories. I wish I could remember. I think it was the only time I danced with one of you guys. I was dressed like a little nerd that day, thanks to my mother, who insisted I not look enticing in any way. Leo,John do you remember what you gave me for my birthday, once? I do,because it embarrassed me a little, even though my mother thought it was so practical. My mother would make me lay my presents on my bed and escort all my guests inside to see what I had been given. I think it was some kind of Cuban-tradition ,I guess. I felt so "uncool" back then because my parents were so strict about what we could wear and what we could do. Anything out of the ordinary was considered,"COMMUNISTIC" I guess it was hard for them, but I didn't understand it at the time. Do you remember the bagel shop and how great the hot bagels were,if you could get them before they turned cold. The 5 and 10 was also pretty cool. I remember buying the latest fads there, like the yo-yos and tops that were popular for a while. There were also those gummy animal creatures that came out of those gum ball machines. I once lined them up on my parents' wooden cocktail table and left them overnight. The next day they left a permanent outline of themselves, ruining the table completely. That was almost the last day of my life on earth. Remember those jumping ropes that you strapped on to your ankle and circled around your feet. As I recall,Josephine was exceptionally good at this. Her coordination, perfect posture and quick reflexes had me in awe of her . I just wanted to be "HER' at that moment. I also remember those huge plastic hot colored bubble rings, that the girls wore for a while. I think I still have one. Well enough of these memories, have to meditate and recall some more. Talk to all later. Zeida

Who Was This?

I remember being at a dance (teen club?), in the school cafeteria, the lights were low, the music playing, the refreshment center being the only glowing lights in the place. Everyone was partnered up for a "slow dance", and I remember one of the faculty coming around to put a ruler between the dancers bodies to make sure " there was room for the Holy Spirit". Does anyone else remember this? I am kind of thinking maybe it was Sr. Joseph or Sr. Ignatious??? This ws usually quite bothersome EXCEPT for one dance when I was mentally begging for a nun to "measure"us out, but no one ever came. Now here is a riddle for you, Leo. Who was I dancing with at this dance when I wished with all my might for a ruler wielding nun??? Ah ha, the riddler gets ridddled. I will be VERY surprised if you can correctly answer this one, since it just popped into my head as I read some of the other postings.

As for the clickers, they were a way of life for us all for years, John. How could you not remember them???

And how come none of you alter servers remember the woman with the Turrets Syndrome which I mentioned in an earlier posting? You guys had to have heard her up on the alter.
She was loud, she hissed and yelled and spat like a cat, and cursed under her breath (loudly), and scared the daylights out of me.

My youngest has been in bed with the flu for 2 days now and I am starting to feel like a private duty nurse. Now I remember why I never went into nursing!

Father Frazzata ?

Should I attempt to find him. My parents have an address for him. Leo,John what say you? It makes no difference to me. Meeting at Anna's sometime in January is fine, just let me know when. We must also decide on a time. Anyway,I have to run,we're picking up our son from his College and it's a 6 hour ride. Enjoy your weekend. Zeida

Tom

Make sure to scan a pic of yourself also,so we can view each other simultaneously. Please do not post the pic with my small son in it. I rather his picture not appear on the net. I actually think everyone should scan a pic of themselves for us all to see. It's been 35 years and we are ALL anxious and curious to see how the others look. Let's make it fair now. And Tom,you can do some touching up on the pics,if you'd like. ;)

Carol,

Scan in one of the photos and email it to me. I'll post it for you.

-Tom

NO Carol

The reunion pics should only be forwarded to those who attended. If our other classmates want to see them, then they too, need to forward their pics to us. This way everyone gets to see what the other looks like 35 years after OLA. Also, remember not to post the group pic on the net,my son's in the picture and I'd rather not have it on the internet. Yes, John and Leo your analysis was quite interesting ,but as I remember there were other girls in our class that you found more interesting so I don't believe I was one of your love interests. I have many more revealing autograph entries that maybe Dr. John can analyze, including two from you Suzette, which are quite interesting. I will begin publishing them soon. Let's come up with a date, guys!!!!! I'll meet at Anna's also, just tell me what date you are planning it for. See you all later . Zeida

Sex. Lies and Diaries

Leo and John-
Sorry, the diary wont do us any good on the party you refer to. For one reason or another, I was not in attendance. So I cant honestly tell you "what all" went on in that closet!!! However, I do appreciate the Freudian analysis you both gave for the duck reference. Zeida, I never knew your panties were such a "hot item" and worthy of such discussion. If I only knew, then when we girls went to the restroom together, we would have paid more attention to these "duck imitators". Ahhhhh more wasted moments in life.........
John and Leo, you two are unbelievable. After all these years, you are steaming up the blogger with your repressed, and unleashed fantasies. Shame on you both!!!(ha) I hope Annas house has good ventilation, cause with you two in the room, things will heat up quickly, I am sure!!!
Zeida, I do believe, since they have waited so many years for fulfillment, that when we all meet up again, that you should give each John and Leo, their own pair of downy-white panties to remember you by. It will be somewhat of your signature souvenier for them. What do you think of the suggestion?
Carol, you really need to at least let us peek at ONE, please just one, picture of your mini-reunion. It's no fair keeping the rest of us unfortunates out in the cold for all these extra months. Please, just one??????????
Sonja-you have been mighty quiet on the blogger. How come? We need some of those droll words of wisdom dripping from your ruby, red lips. Why so glum, chum???
Tom-I dont know what you do to keep the blogger going, technically, but I, for one, would like to thank you. Each time anyone has a problem with it, you rush to their rescue. Thanks for accomplishing something that would "vex me heartily" - as well as keeping us all communicating.
John - have we come to concensus as to a DEFINATE date for our reunion yet? If not, WHEN are we going to make that decision?
Anna - Do you realize how very brave you are for offerring your home to us. What if we want to play spin the bottle, or go into a closet together somewhere? Gosh, I know that NONE of my closets are empty enough to allow room for one, let alone two people to be in them at any given time.
Leo - As I read your reference about Fr. Frazetta, I wonder in what context he was asking you that question? And where were you when he asked? I am sorry, but I have an inquiring mind and I guess I am unusually suspicious (after working inthe field I've been for so long). I realize now, when I think back on the past, how youthful and trusting we all were back then.
Has anyone been able to trace Linda Cordero or Lola James yet? Has anyone managed to contact Maritina and get her onto the blogger yet? Wasnt there also a girl named Mary Rose something, who went with us from OLA to Mary Louis? Come on Carol, you are the secretary of all that transpired in elementary school. You should remember this girl. She and Sonja used to be close, when just the two of them were together. For some reason, neither you nor I were close to this girl as Sonja was. What about Elizabeth Griffin? Anyone find her yet? Was she andBarbara Leumia close? Carol, have you asked Barbara about Elizabeth?
Does anyone remember the "clickers" the nuns used when we were in church? I remember at 9o'clock Mass, we all had to sit together, and they would click when we had to rise as a group, click when we had to kneel and click when we had to sit. For years after I left OLA, whenever I heard a clicking sound, I would sit, stand or attempt to kneel, no matter what the occasion. Some habits are hard to break.
Also, another thing I just remembered that is really digging into my memory banks. I remember being at the same Mass each Sunday, and there was a black haired lady (a parishioner) who, I guess, must have had Tourettes Syndrome. During Mass she would yell out, make noises, and in general, scare the living crap out of me. I remember, Carol and I used to giggle at this womans "antics" but then I used to think, "Gee, maybe she is a witch and is casting a spell on us all in Church. I'd better stop laughing at her", and I would try to settle down and ignore her, but it was VERY hard to do. Do any of you boys remember her from your alter serving days?

Tuesday, December 09, 2003

John,

You may need to speak with a quack.

-Tom

John,stop the "MADNESS!"

The following is exactly what you wrote in my diary,"I wish to you all my good luck only because you don't look like a duck". Do you recall me running like a duck? Or was it my white underwear that suggested white, under feathers of a duck. Oh and you signed it "FROMMMM John". Leo's entry was much more sofisticated and mature,a man of the world.Mathew wrote,"Dear Zeida,May you have a lot of success and good luck and have no sickness or worries. Best wishes Mathew Monahan" He made sure not to leave ANYTHING out. How sweet! But not you John, your wish to me was based on me,not looking like a duck.We really need to talk,I think I can help you. :) Zeida

Sister Paula

Isnt it amazing how the nuns used to "gingerly bounce heads off the walls" and no one ever thought of suing them, reporting them for child abuse or any of the miriad of other responses children today would have to the same situation. Of course, being the "wonderful" child that I was, no one ever had to treat me harshly(ahm), but I can remember the nuns and Ms. Marus getting physical with quite a few of you boys. Were you all THAT awful? What DID go on in that head of yours, John???

Diaries

Dear John-

I can do one better than tell you about the party. I will offer to bring my diary and share some of the notations I have made in it regarding life at OLA. How's that for honesty? I will open my diary to all eyes to see notes of long lost loves and longings and parties long forgotten. I think many people will get a chuckle out of reading those words written so long ago.

Mission Accomplished

I have entered my dates onto Johns spread sheet.

Just today, while cleaning out the attic, my son, Austin, found a bag containing OLD diaries of mine. I read one of the entries and it was written on my birthday of my 14th year. Apparently Carol was in on giving me a party at my house. She took me out shopping ( so the diary says) until 2pm where we returned and the party began. I list who was there, and even the gift they kindly gave. I mentioned Sonja, Linda,Anna, of course Carol,Tommy, Matthew, Douglas and a few others. It was funny because the diary says that Tommy bought me a perfume, but it broke so he went back out an got me a wallet insteaad, but he told me about the broken perfume. I got a chuckle out of that. Its funny because before reading the diary, I really couldnt recall these events, but after reading it, the party was right in the forfront of my memory - like it happened only a year or so ago, and not more than I care to remember. It's a funny thing - memory, isnt it? If this can happen just from reading a diary - imagine what memories will be invoked when we reconvene after all these years !

Where Is Everyone?

I have clicked into the blog for two days now, and there are still no new messages. Is everyone scurrying about doing their shopping for the holidays? Take a moment for us poor souls who are compulsively-organized and have everything done. We, too, need to communicate with our peers.

I have received Johns spreadsheet and shall put in my X's today on dates which would work for me. Is there a cut off date where we either reply, or deal with the majority vote? After all these contacts, it would be so sad if this reunion never materialized. What is the majority decision regarding venue? Is it Anna's house or a resturaunt?

Immediately after Christmas I shall be off the blog for about 10 days. It's my 20th wedding anniversary and we are going on an 8 day cruise to the Bahamas to celebrate. We need to stay overnight at a hotel the night before and the day after the cruise in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Any of us in that area???

In case things get too hectic, may I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of us a very Merry Chirstmas which is peace-filled and health-filled. Also, a most prosperous New Year!!! Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Ropa Vieja to Riches

GULFPORT - When Josefa Gonzalez-Hastings and her parents fled Castro's Cuba in the mid 1960s, they left nearly everything behind except the clothes they could carry in flimsy cardboard suitcases.

She was about 5 years old, but the owner of the Habana Cafe remembers that she was allowed to take her favorite empire-waist dress, which fell in pleats below the bodice. For nine months, while the family waited in Mexico City to enter the United States, the pleated dress was worn in rotation with a couple of other outfits.

"By the time we got to Miami, it was in shreds," Gonzalez-Hastings says. "And to this day, every time I cook ropa vieja, I think of that dress."

Ropa vieja is a classic Cuban dish in which a flavorful, yet potentially tough, cut of meat, such as London broil or chuck roast, is stewed with onion, green peppers, tomatoes and spices until the meat is so tender, it pulls apart and resembles rags.

In Spanish, "ropa vieja" means "old clothes."

A black and white photograph as tattered as the child's dress it shows will appear in Gonzalez-Hastings' The Habana Cafe Cookbook, to be published in the spring by University Press of Florida. The book is a celebration of family and the lusty cuisine spread throughout the United States by the many people who left Cuba after Fidel Castro took control in 1959. The book will include about 125 recipes, along with photographs by Jennifer Holcombe of St. Petersburg.

"Castro came to power on Jan. 1, and I was born the 14th," Gonzalez-Hastings, 44, says. "My parents thought it would all blow over, but after a few years, they realized it wouldn't."

The Gonzalezes began planning to leave Cuba and join relatives in Florida. The couple had already decided not to have more children. How could they provide for them? What sort of life would they have?

In the case of their daughter, who is commonly called Jo, life has turned out better than good.

Gonzalez-Hastings, who is on extended leave from her job as an American Airlines flight attendant, sits on a bench in her 85-seat restaurant. Behind her is a dairy case of desserts and imported beers. Beyond that are the presses that grill traditional Cuban sandwiches, without blasphemous mayonnaise, tomatoes or lettuce. Regulars and friends stop by or call in a steady steam during the lunch rush.

Her eyes, as dark as Cuban coffee straight up, flash as she talks about the cookbook and the success of the restaurant she opened in 1997.

As if the book wasn't enough to be giddy about, Gonzalez-Hastings is one of 15 finalists in Southern Living magazine's annual cookoff. On Friday, she will make her original Cream Cheese Flan for a panel of judges in Nashville. The grand prize winner takes home $100,000. (The recipe, selected from about 35,000 entries, will be printed in Taste after the competition.)

"It's been an amazing summer," she says. The Food Network, which will air a special on the cookoff in January, was scheduled to go to Gonzalez-Hastings' home last week to film her, but Hurricane Isabel scared off the crew.

Gonzalez-Hastings and the friends she lined up to be in the home audience were disappointed, but you get the feeling they'll get over it.

Especially if they have Habana's luscious pork sandwich in front of them. The Habana Cafe menu is mostly traditional Cuban, with the sauces and seasoning done by Gonzalez-Hastings. She expands the typical offerings for nightly specials when dill, artichokes and blue cheese mambo with mojo.

The restaurant began as a yearslong dream of Gonzalez-Hastings and her mother, Flor, who wanted to open a Cuban restaurant soon after the family arrived in St. Petersburg in the 1960s. Her father, Emilio, who died 12 years ago, resisted the idea. He was afraid they would lose everything - again.

"It makes you scared," Gonzalez-Hastings says. "You know what you have, and then you know what you can lose."

Still, the idea stuck with Gonzalez-Hastings, but she had another person to convince. Her husband, David, is a certified public accountant who has many restaurant clients. He knows how hard it is for a new, independent restaurant to succeed. They finally came to terms, and the high-ceiling, casual restaurant at 5402 Gulfport Blvd. S was born.

Today, Flor Gonzalez, a retired teacher, makes the desserts, and 25 employees cook, wait tables and wash dishes.

Gonzalez-Hastings' story is not unlike those of thousands of Cubans who've flocked to Florida since the 1960s. They have brought tales of life before, and after, communism, along with heads full of recipes for boliche, picadillo, arroz con pollo and drunken shrimp silly with white wine. Hunks of soft Cuban bread soak up the garlic-lemon broth.

The Gonzalez family settled in St. Petersburg at a time when it was more of an attraction than the sideshows at Doc Webb's legendary shopping mecca, Webb's City.

"We'd be speaking in Spanish there, and everyone would be looking at us instead of the mermaid show," Gonzalez-Hastings says.

The well-established Cuban community in Tampa and Ybor City did not spill over much into Pinellas County at that time. But in the Gonzalez kitchen, it might as well have been Havana, 1958.

"My mom would get out of school, go to the grocery store and then start cooking," Gonzalez-Hastings says. "We never had grilled cheese sandwiches or spaghetti and meatballs like other families."

Their Tyrone area home was a beacon for kids with tastes for something beyond tuna salad. The Gonzalezes joined family in Tampa to roast whole pigs, fearing neighbors in St. Petersburg might call the Fire Department.

A few years ago, Gonzalez-Hastings began writing down some of her family's recipes for fear they would disappear over time. Friends encouraged the book, and Chicago freelance editor Andria Kuzeff helped get it in shape to send off to a publisher.

The cookbook was two years in the making, with Gonzalez-Hastings challenged to transform megaserving restaurant recipes into ones for a more manageable six or eight. She hopes the book will introduce more people to Cuban cooking. (The recipes from the book won't be available until closer to the publication date.)

"The book includes a lot of charming anecdotes, and her personality shines right through," Kuzeff says.

Kuzeff says Cuban cuisine is really hot and believes The Habana Cafe Cookbook will be well-received regionally and possibly nationally.

"I've seen some cookbooks on the market, but none as nice as I think this one will be," Kuzeff says.

Carol's Party

Dear John-
I have VIVID memories of playing our little games in the dark. After all these years it seems that the guys weren't the only ones with devious minds. Yes, we girls were guilty of it also! Blind Man's Bluff was a WONDERFUL game for us back then. Have no fear - the girls were just as interested in "accidentally" touching someone as you guys were - only we were a bit(???)more subtle about it(maybe). I also remember a hot and heavy game of Spin the Bottle on Carol's living room floor (why did all the good stuff happen at Carol's house?) Does anyone else remember that game, that particular night? I remember "some people" left the group and went upstairs to "listen to records" in Carols guest bedroom. Wonder who those people were???Any honest souls out there after so long???

Other graduating classes want to participate in this blog

I've had a few requests to open this Blog up to other OLA classes.
Today I received a message from a graduate of the Class of 1967 - Camelia Canepa - now Camelia Canepa-Zipprich. She was in Jerone DeCurtis' class along with Stephen Langowski, Paul's brother. Camelia has some questions about Ms. Maris which I will forward to Suzette. I will tell you that I am working on a proper website that will be complete with all the bells and wistles to allow for separate discussion forums, online chat, sharing photos, easier access, etc. Do you want to grow the population here or wait? Comments please.

I thought we were encouraging spouses???

Josephine-
Your clean up idea is a sound one, but I thought we were encouraging the spouses and children of us OLA'ers to come to the reunion. Clean-up crew does NOT sound encouraging to anyone but we who get to sit and reminisce. However, I DO think that if we use Anna's place, we owe it to her to pitch in and clean up our own mess - or get our spouses to do it if we can convince them it is the honorable thing to do. How convincing can we all be?

John, whats taking you so long with that spreadsheet? With the way you and your brother have gone about things, I expected not only to have the spreadsheet circulated, but to already have a choice of two final dates to vote on. Come on, young man. Remove that chip from your shoulder and get your butt in gear!!! Do I sound like Ms. Marus? Sr. Ignatious? or the dreaded Sr. Joseph???

Can' wait till we are all together for the weekend.

Reunion Dates

Leo-
I want us to decide, I think!!!

Seriously, Leo, I have a tight schedule, but I am willing to make it a little bit more crammed by making the reunion. I am returning to graduate school starting January 25th and attending classes every other weekend until April 5th. Then I am off for 2 weeks, and I start the entire business all over again for the next 8 weeks of weekends. Besides that, of course, I am also teaching Monday through Friday. I do not have a calendar in front of me right now, but I do know these dates which I have just given you.

Anna's house sounds like a wonderfully casual idea - but does she know what she is letting herself in for. That is quite an undertaking, to cater for all of us - and clean up afterwards!!! If not that, then for an easy place to be, if not Anna's, then I re-vote, once again, for the Sly Fox Inn near St. John's University.

May I remind you all once again, that for those of us who need to make air reservations, we need to settle on a date soon so those reservations can be made. Also, someone, I think it was Tommy, Zeida or even I, had suggested that once we settle on a date and a hotel, we can then bargain with them(the hotel) for a block of rooms at a reduced rate, and we can all stay at the same hotel.

In any event, I am REALLY looking forward to this reunion. This past Friday Estelle (Renee) Casali and I met in Gaffney, South Carolina for an impromptu lunch ( and then on to Christmas shopping). It was wonderful seeing her after so many years had passed. She looks wonderful, and her life has many full and exciting experiences. We had a good time reminiscing and rememering " the good old days". Lets all do it on a grand scale and get all of us together under one roof. It will be a blast!!!

Set the date, or give a choice of two possible dates, after John makes his spreadsheet of dates, and lets take it from there. Lets make this as accessible to the masses as we can and have a good time doing it too.

Now, looking at a calendar, here are the dates I could be available for a trip to NY:
Jan 31
Feb. 28th
March 13th
March 27th
April 3rd - This would be IDEAL for me cause it is Easter break for my job and I am off for 9 days.
April 10th
May 1st
May 15th
May29th This would also be ideal for me since as of this date I am now free of my job for the summer, but not my grad classes. My last day of work would be May 27th, and I could make a short vacation for myself up in NY at this time.
June 12th

This should be enough from me to give you an idea of my class schedule. Hope we can make a match with the majority and that the others can maneuver their schedules a bit to fit in with the majority. It will be the most fun if we ALL can make it. It will never be a perfect date for everyone, but if we all compromise, we can do this.

See you all soon, I hope.
